TO RAG SOMEBODY. TO RAG SOME BODY.

And the rag happens. It’s as simple, as plain and as normal as that. Vishwa Warnapala can promise his professorial arse that laws will be implemented, Deans and Vice Chancellors (most of em, mainly to keep up the image that he supports non-violence) denounce it, but the rag goes on. On song.

These are students from the Arts, University of Peradeniya being “day ragged” during the lunch break. This is merely a 50 M radius from the Dean’s office and the Senate Building. Ragging, guised and guarded as an internalization programme has also received the protection, the in/direct support and consent of part of the academic establishment — this is no secret.

Lined up, herded and humiliated in broad daylight with the Dean and VC lost in their masturbatory dreams or nightmares just 50 M away — what greater tragedy can hit a kid on campus? Of course, the reactionary would say that there are kids who get ragged by WILL. That they LIKE to get ragged.

Unfortunately — NO. No one likes to get ragged — as long as the rag is NOT rationalized, is NOT given breeding ground and is NOT allowed to be weaponized as it is done throughout the campus.

They do look as if they are gonna damn enjoy the onslaught that will hit them in a few minutes now, don’t they?

Resist university ragging. Do it as a human and in the humane way. Do it not as a narrow classificatory movement, but for the wider human “good”. Fucking one in the arse is not politically innocent. It has no default….until it is made, rationalized and ritualized as such.

It is very disheartening to see ragging being the fiesta for a handful of organized students to play God just for these initial months of the academic year. This is more so cos there’s a growing wave of “non-Students Unionism” across the more urban-minded campus circuit.

A sustained effort can surely minimize the rag. But, unfortunately, the authorities, non-rag groups, humanitarian on-campus bodies etc have failed to lay out a structured plan to even start out on such a venture.

There are lot of reasons for continuation of rag in universities
As you mentioned neutralism authorities is one reason, Now days Non-rag groups works actively to rise against ragging. But still they’re the minority. So things that we can do is limited.Still the co-operation between non rag groups of different faculties is not sufficient to work against ragging.
But we hope that we can change these things in near future…….
